Zhelyazkova co-directed her first film, which was originally supposed to be called “Partisans”, with her husband. He also wrote the screenplay, which had to be rewritten several times before the authorities approved. In it, Zhelyazkova and Ganev tell the story of two partisans and friends who grow apart after the Bulgarian monarchy is toppled. One of them profits from the new order whereas the other remains critical and does not see the new rulers as realizing his communist ideals. “Additionally, LIFE FLOWS SLOWLY BY … introduces on the big screen a new type of socialist woman: determined, self-reliant, learned, but capable of unconditional love, and a woman who kisses first. There is an open finale à la Antonioni, way before Antonioni.” (Yoana Pavlova)
